Well, it's just a theory, but here's why I think it's more likely the first than the second. Hamas would have to do something really, really big and awful to alter world opinion enough to be strong enough on Israel's side. However, Israel is very protective of their citizens (they started a war because one soldier was captured, after all), so I don't think they'd be willing to pay the cost for this. Also, I think Israel gains more by causing Hamas to lose face because it will be extremely difficult to eradicate Hamas completely in any circumstances, but particularly if they are seen as Arab and Palestinian heroes. Finally, since Israel has now started its ground assault, it obviously isn't overly concerned with world opinion at the moment.
